How To Clean Your Jewelry The Right Way

How To Clean Your Jewelry The Right Way

Looking for ways to keep your jewelry cute and shiny without tarnishing? We’ve got you covered with these six easy tips to cleaning your jewelry in the comfort of your own home! Grab your favorite pieces, put on your reading glasses, and let’s get started!

Beauty first, Jewelry Second

Whether we start our day with makeup and perfume, or simply just skincare and body cream, we all like to pamper ourselves one way or another. With that being said, it’s important to keep in mind the chemicals that our products often contain, seeing as they can tarnish our stunning plated jewelry pieces that we are wearing. An easy fix? Try applying your products before putting your jewelry on for the day! This way, your products will have time to settle while saving your jewelry from those harsh chemicals!

Wear, Then Clean

We’re all so used to just grabbing our favorite jewelry pieces in the morning, wearing them for the day, then taking them off and forgetting about them until the next day. Today, we’re here to let you know that it’s time to give your pieces some love and care before putting them away. Picture this: You get home from a long day at work, and it’s finally time to change into some comfy clothes and take off your favorite Evry Jewels pieces like the Flash Ring, the Baby Angel Necklace, the Classy Earrings … (We can go on forever). Anyways, do you just leave your pieces on your bedside table and right away go binge-watch some Netflix show? As relaxing as that sounds, we strongly recommend you clean your pieces after taking them off (yes, you can go binge-watch afterwards…) To get started with this, you need something as gentle as a cotton ball! Gently rub your pieces with the cotton ball to ensure that any smudges or oil comes off. And Voila, they look good as new!

Some Extra Love & Care

Although gently cleaning your jewelry after every wear is important, we also suggest giving them more of a deep cleaning every so often to really keep them looking good as new. You know those days you have to yourself to practice self care and whatnot? Well, we’re giving you another task to practice on days like that which involve taking care of your jewelry pieces by giving them some extra love. With that being said, we recommend every two weeks or so to take a bowl of warm water and soap (and no, not that antibacterial soap since it’s harmful to jewelry!), and soak your pieces for 2-5 minutes. While doing so, make sure to only soak a couple pieces at a time to avoid scratching against each other. You’ll notice that your jewelry will come out looking shiny and new, just in time for that date night or a girl’s night out! Thank us later.

How to Clean Tarnished Jewelry

Tarnish occurs on a jewelry item when the metal comes into contact with certain outside substances. Some substances that cause tarnishing in jewelry are body oils, sulfur, sweat, makeup and other cosmetics.  There are ways where you can prevent tarnishing on your favorite jewelry piece. An article published by Cosmopolitan provides reasoning for our jewelry tarnishing and tips to prevent tarnishing as well as ways to clean your tarnished jewelry.

Homemade Jewelry Cleaner

How can you clean your own jewelry from home? Create your own DIY jewelry cleaner in 5 easy steps!

  • Add 1 tablespoon of dish soda or baking soda to a glass bowl that is covered in tin foil
  • Add boiling water to the bowl, (cover the jewelry)
  • Let the jewelry items soak for a few minutes
  • Remove the jewelry and place on a paper towel
  • Polish the jewelry item item with a soft cloth to remove any excess residue

It’s All About The Storage

Although most of us just feel like throwing our jewelry pieces on the first table we see, we have to keep in mind how that could affect their quality! We’re here to let you in on a little secret: How you store your jewelry affects how long they last. Leaving them freely on a table will cause them to oxidize and eventually tarnish… which isn’t pretty. Luckily for you there are different ways to savor that adorable jewelry of yours, let us show you! One way would be to avoid storing your gold and silver plated jewelry together, as it makes the jewelry tarnish more quickly. Instead, try to separate them so they can stay as good as new. Another way would be to separate each piece in little baggies, this will ensure they don’t scratch against each other. Last but not least, we suggest investing in some cute jewelry boxes. Not only do they look cute as you can match them to your room’s aesthetic, but they are also super practical in organizing all your favorite pieces while also keeping them in good condition.

Time to Swim! But Not For Your Jewelry.

It’s so easy to forget about the jewelry we are wearing when it comes time to taking a quick dip in the water! Whether it be a dip in the pool or a swim in the ocean, we have to keep in mind how harsh chlorine and salt water can be to our jewelry. Chlorine is known to damage and leave metals discolored, while salt water is known to cause erosion of certain elements, leaving them weakened with potential to break. Save yourself the trouble of having to buy a whole new jewelry collection by remembering to carefully take them off before you enjoy your quick dip! P.s. Don’t worry, before your swim you can still get those instagram pics in while rocking your adorable Yacht Club Waist Chain and Angel Anklet!
